Background of the Study
Stroke is a leading cause of disability worldwide, with mobility impairments being among the most common sequelae. Early and effective rehabilitation, including mobility programs, is crucial for improving functional outcomes in stroke patients. Nurses play a pivotal role in implementing these programs, which encompass exercises aimed at enhancing balance, strength, and coordination. Standardized measurement of balance and mobility post-stroke is essential for assessing recovery and guiding rehabilitation efforts.
In Nigeria, including Plateau State, the integration of structured mobility programs into stroke care is still developing. Assessing nurses' awareness and the implementation of these programs is vital to identify gaps and enhance patient care.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of mobility programs in stroke rehabilitation, there is limited information regarding nurses' awareness and implementation of such programs at Plateau State Specialist Hospital. Preliminary observations suggest potential gaps in knowledge and practice, which may affect the quality of care provided to stroke patients. This study aims to evaluate nurses' awareness and the extent to which mobility programs are implemented in the hospital.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of awareness among nurses regarding the importance and components of mobility programs for stroke patients.
2. To evaluate the extent to which nurses implement mobility programs in the care of stroke patients.
3. To identify barriers hindering the effective implementation of mobility programs.
Research Questions
1. What is the current level of awareness among nurses about mobility programs for stroke patients?
2. To what extent do nurses implement mobility programs in the care of stroke patients?
3. What challenges do nurses face in effectively implementing mobility programs?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses at Plateau State Specialist Hospital possess adequate awareness regarding mobility programs for stroke patients.
2. There is a significant relationship between nurses' awareness levels and the implementation of mobility programs.
3. Identifiable barriers negatively affect the implementation of mobility programs.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on registered nurses working in the neurology and rehabilitation units at Plateau State Specialist Hospital. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires and interviews to assess awareness levels, implementation practices, and perceived barriers. Limitations may include self-reporting biases and the study's confinement to a single institution, which may affect the generalizability of findings.
